An open letter to William Hague
Dear Mr Hague
I am born and raised in Britain, I like to have a good moan and all the rest of it but (cliche time) at the end of the day I love my country. Not in an overtly patriotic way because I'm English and frankly we find that embarrassing.
Every country has its problems but we have a lot to be grateful for, the pinnacle of true justice; relative freedom and democracy. Although I bear no grudges against the Queen, and I don't normally make a habit of abusing pensioners, I am glad I am able to say fuck the queen! Without being imprisoned for 20 years (*cough cough* Thailand).
The NHS isn't perfect but even if we are living on the breadline we do not have to necessarily worry about becoming ill because seeing the doctor is free bitches! I have been on forums in the US and the fact that they are on a forum consulting strangers on the net about the state of their health because they cannot afford to see the doctor or buy health insurance is thankfully an alien concept in Britain.
We don't have a reputation for being the friendliest but once you do have a chin wag with most people one on one, you find that most people are good people.
I am even grateful for our legendary 'terrible' weather, bear with me for a second! This year especially, has seen so many devastating natural disasters around the world, and even though our summers last about 2 weeks long and are in the wrong month we should be grateful that, touch wood, we rarely if ever experience truly terrible natural disasters.
We may also have sections of subtle and not so subtle bias media. But it is generally free and compared with other countries 'news' stations like Bahrain, North Korea and even America's revolting Fox News, dare I say it, I am even glad to have the ignorant and hateful rantings of The Sun.
Our strange hybrid government is still nowhere near as bad as some other European countries where the far right parties are deemed credible enough to have seats in Parliament.
I am grateful that when you fall on hard times that there is help such as job seekers allowance and hostels for vulnerable people. There is a lot of things to be grateful for in Britain, and although I will always speak out against something I perceive as wrong, I do heart my country.
My questions are; why are we joining in on the I hate Iran brigade? Or whoever is politically convenient at the time or whoever is not a Western puppet? We are putting sanctions against a country thousands of miles away that has nothing to do with us, we make their people suffer and then you are outraged that the Iranian people storm our embassy? We engage in hypocrisy in the Middle East and now they don't like us? NO SHIT SHERLOCK, you are lucky storming our embassy is all they've done.
Surely we the British people are more important than the US and whatever Pro-Israel lobby you are trying to appease? Your behaviour just conforms to the old adage of imperialistic behaviour. The worst ex-colonialists; the Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, have left their colonial pasts back in the ashamed past where they should be, I think it's high time we did too. Everyone can see through the spin and you do not care about any civilian in the Middle East so save us the bullshit and keep your beaks out of their nuclear plants. They say whoever does not know history is doomed to repeat it. Surely your private school education taught you a bit of history? So why are you repeating it?!
We are not the centre of the world, neither are we America. Even though we have foolishly followed them on every foreign escapade, we've still somehow managed to not be as hated as our American counterparts. So my undying question is Mr Hague, if you love this country as much as I do, why are you trying so hard for us to be hated?
Eagerly awaiting your honest reply,
N.E.E.T.
